What is Internal Quality Control (IQC) in a Laboratory?

Before understanding IQC, let’s first understand what Quality Control (QC) actually means in the laboratory world.

Quality Control (QC) is the process that helps labs ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results before delivering reports to patients. In labs, two major types of QC are performed:

✅ 1. Internal Quality Control (IQC)
✅ 2. External Quality Assurance (EQA) — also called Proficiency Testing (PT)

Today, let’s focus on Internal Quality Control (IQC).

✅ What is IQC?

IQC stands for Internal Quality Control. It involves regularly running QC samples on laboratory machines to ensure the system is producing accurate and consistent results.

In simple terms, before running real patient samples, labs run pre-tested control samples through the machines.
If the machine gives the correct result for these known samples, the lab can be confident that patient results will also be correct.

This is why most labs run two types of IQC daily:

Normal QC
Abnormal QC

By doing this, the lab checks the precision and repeatability of their machines — ensuring that patient test results are trustworthy.
